Managing seasonal allergies in pets

Just like humans, pets can suffer from seasonal allergies. These allergies, often triggered by environmental factors such as ragweed, grasses, pollens, molds, and trees, can cause significant discomfort for our furry friends. As pet owners, it's important to recognize the signs of allergic reactions and take appropriate steps to manage them.

Common symptoms of allergies in pets

Pets with seasonal allergies may exhibit a variety of symptoms, including:

  • Runny nose, watery eyes, coughing, and sneezing
  • Head shaking, scratching at the ears, hair loss around the ears, and ear discharge
  • Hair loss, open sores, rash, scabbing, and hot spots (red, inflamed, infected skin that may often bleed)
  • Itching, chewing at paws or other body parts, rubbing against furniture and/or carpet, and wheezing
  • Red, puffy eyes, red lips, red chin, pimples, pustules, and red paws
Finding relief

For temporary relief, frequent baths using a grain-free shampoo and foot soaks can help reduce the amount of allergens tracked into the home. For long-term relief, you may need to consult with your veterinarian about testing, medication, and desensitization shots. Vets may also recommend supplements or specialized diets to address specific allergic issues.

As pets age and continue to be exposed to allergens, their allergic reactions can become year-long challenges. Therefore, it's important to stay vigilant and proactive in managing their allergies. Nationwide® pet insurance offers comprehensive coverage for allergies and more, ensuring that pet owners can provide the best care for their beloved companions.
