Holiday 2023

Start the new year off on the right paw

Get a fresh start to 2024 by updating worn out pet supplies, tags and ID and more

January 1st is a popular day for replacing old habits and worn-out objects to get a fresh new start for the year to come.

Looking to get a jump on the year for your pet care? Get pup-pared for 2024 by putting the following in order.

Clean it out

Give pets a new leash on life by inspecting their daily necessities and checking for signs that they may need to be replaced.

  • Wash your pet's toys and check them for damage. Remove frayed parts and small pieces that may cause a choking hazard. If toys are too ragged to clean or repair, it may be time to replace them.
  • Launder pet beds according to the manufacturer's instructions. Beds that have rips, tears and exposed filling should be replaced. Flattened or misshapen beds that no longer provide cushioning or support for your pet should also be cycled out. Generally, pet beds should be replaced every two years.
  • Check food and water dishes for damage and wear. Replace dishes that have bumps, grooves and scratches that can harbor bacterial build-up over time. Revisit manufacturer cleaning instructions to learn how to properly sanitize and clean dishes.
  • Replace worn out litter boxes. As a rule, litter boxes should be replaced annually. Scratches, stains, scuffs and odors that don’t go away are all signs that it’s time to bring in the new year with a new litter box.

Staying safe at home

If your pet gets lost, a tag or collar with your contact information is the fastest and most effective way to reunite with your pet. Every new year, take a moment to ensure that your pet’s collar still fits properly, and that your pet’s ID tags are legible and current.

Similarly, a properly functioning microchip increases the odds that you’ll be reunited with your pet. Have your veterinarian scan your pet’s microchip to ensure its location and functionality. Also, ensure that the phone number and address information on your pet’s microchip is current. Not sure where your pet’s chip is registered? Visit the AAHA Universal Pet Microchip Lookup Tool at petmicrochiplookup.org.

Finally, check the fencing and gates in your pet’s outdoor enclosure to make sure there are no weak spots they can slip through. For avian and small animal enclosures, check cages and enclosures are secure and safe. While you’re at it, look for scratches in plastic material, flaky paint or rusted metal parts and sharp protrusions that may harm your pet.

Stock up for the unexpected

The new year also offers a great opportunity to make sure you and your pet are ready for anything.

  • Build your pet go-bag. Keep your pet go-bag bag stocked with a 5-day supply of food, water, medications, bowls, litter box or waste bags and a list of current vaccinations, plus a list of places outside your immediate area that will shelter your pet.
  • Build (or restock) your pet first aid kit. Be ready in the event of an injury to your pet. Include essential basics such as saline, triple antibiotic ointment, styptic powder, disposable gloves, a basket muzzle and a towel or blanket.
  • Update important numbers. Check your phone has contact numbers saved for your veterinarian and your nearest 24-hour pet hospital. Also, download the Nationwide VetHelpline® app, which connects you with a licensed veterinary professional anytime via video chat. Best of all, Nationwide pet insurance members get unlimited access to VetHelpline at no added cost.

Set a baseline for pet health

Start the year strong by getting all your pet’s annual veterinary checkups and vaccinations in order.

  • Schedule an annual wellness checkup. Pets should see their primary veterinarian at least once a year. Senior pets and pets with health conditions are recommended to visit their veterinarian more frequently to help catch potential problems early.
  • Check your pet's vaccination needs. Some vaccinations need to be renewed annually, while others may be every couple of years. Know your pet’s status to ensure they stay protected against diseases.
