Our favorite DIY dog treats

Pups love these homemade peanut butter pumpkin dog biscuits.

Give your pet a special treat with these delightfully delicious peanut butter pumpkin dog biscuits.

Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 cup canned pumpkin (100% pure pumpkin, not pumpkin pie filling)
  • 2 tablespoons peanut butter*
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • Optional: Fun cookie cutters for added seasonal delight!

*Xylitol Warning! Before mixing the peanut butter into the batter, make sure to read the ingredients label on the peanut butter jar. Many nut butters are now using xylitol as a sugar substitute. Xylitol is extremely toxic to dogs.

Directions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  2. Line two cookie sheets with parchment paper or nonstick baking mats.
  3. Whisk together the flour, eggs, pumpkin, peanut butter, salt and cinnamon in a mixing bowl. Add water as needed to help make the dough workable, but the dough should be dry and stiff.
  4. Sprinkle some wheat flour on a pastry board or stone countertop to prevent your dough from sticking to the surface. Mix fully using your hands, then roll the dough into a 1/2-inch-thick log.
  5. Using a pastry or butter knife, cut into the dough into 1/2-inch pieces. You can also use decorative cookie cutters by rolling the dough flat with a rolling pin.
  6. Bake in preheated oven until hard, about 40 minutes, then let the cookies fully cool.
  7. Check the density of the cookies. Dog cookies need to be hard and crunchy, so they don’t get stuck in teeth. Press in the center with a finger—if there’s no squish, they’re ready.
